Pomeranians are classified as a toy dog breed. These tiny dogs are fluffy and have wedge shaped heads with pointed ears that stand erect. In many ways, they resemble smaller versions of Spitz type dogs. To most people these dogs look like walking powder puffs or little fuzz balls. Their coats may be cream, orange, blue, gray, black, shaded sable or multicolored. These dogs carry their feathered tails fan upward on their backs and intelligent expressions can be seen in the Pomeranians’ dark almond-shaped eyes. Both male and female dogs average 7-12 inches (18-30 cm) in height and 3-7 pounds (1-3 kg) in weight.

Grooming is very important in caring for the cottony double coats on Pomeranians. Owners should start from the head, work down the dog’s body, brush the hair forward, and then let it fall back into its natural position. Dry shampoo should only be used when necessary. Special care and attention should be given each day to keeping the eyes and ears of these dogs clean.

These lively little dogs are very smart and eager to learn. They are very loyal to their owners but may sometimes be temperamental. Pomeranians can be easily trained and make good watchdogs by barking at anything that is out of the ordinary. They are easily excited and sometimes willful but these tendencies can be controlled with obedience training at a young age. Consistency is the key element in training these dogs and a firm hand may be required at times as well. Most Pomeranians are proud to please their owners with learning tricks but this will require both time and patience.

Pomeranians are not recommended for families with small children. These dogs are very fragile and can become very nervous or snappy when they are over-stimulated. They do fine with older children and make great companions for elderly people because they are both affectionate and even-tempered.

These dogs are generally picky eaters but do not require any special diets. Dry food is recommended however since this breed is prone to losing teeth with age. Regular dental checkups are also recommended. Light activity or playing will fulfill this breed’s exercise needs but they may also enjoy short walks. Since they are so small, these dogs are perfect for apartment dwellers and condominium owners.

Some health concerns that may affect Pomeranians include eye, knee, heart, and skin problems. Especially small female dogs may need cesarean sections to deliver their puppies. At birth, several newborn puppies will fit in the palm of your hand and are often quite fragile or prone to injuries. The typical life expectancy of a Pomeranian is about 15 years or so.

Pomeranians were developed originally in a region of Prussia know as Pomerania. These dogs are descendents of ancient Spitz breeds that came from far northern areas and were later brought to Europe to herd sheep. In the late 1800s, royal and noble citizens owned some of these dogs. Today, they are mainly owned as show dogs or loving companions.
